Set up a TV for your menu

Pro

What you need to show your menu on a TV: the TV, a device with a web browser, Wi-Fi and one link. No player box, no USB stick to update.

You need three things: a TV, something on it that can open a web page, and Wi-Fi. If your TV is a smart TV, you may already have all three.

Set up the TV

  1. Hang the TV where guests look while they wait: above the counter, by the door or next to the queue.
  2. Connect the TV, or the stick or laptop plugged into it, to your Wi-Fi.
  3. In the Dashboard, add a screen with the same orientation as the TV.
  4. Open the screen's link in the TV's browser and choose Full screen.
  5. In the TV's own settings, turn off auto power off, sleep timers and the screensaver. They are usually under Power or Eco.
  6. Leave the TV on. Switch it off at closing like any other light.
One link, opened once. The TV keeps showing it.
  • A smart TV with a browser. Most Samsung and LG smart TVs have one built in.
  • An Amazon Fire TV stick. Use the Silk browser from the Amazon Appstore.
  • A laptop or mini PC on HDMI. Any browser works. The most reliable choice.
  • Not: Roku and Apple TV have no web browser. Chromecast and Google TV have none built in.

Good to know

  • Vertical TV? It needs a device that can turn its picture, like a laptop or mini PC set to portrait in its display settings. A Fire TV stick and most TV browsers only show horizontal.
  • Why not a photo on a USB stick? It shows the menu as it was the day you made it. A link shows your menu as it is in the Dashboard.
  • The menu page asks the TV to stay awake and moves a few pixels now and then, so nothing burns into the screen.
  • Menu edges cut off? Turn on Edge margin in the screen settings.
